Arriving back from an extended trip
to China in 2006, artist Jian
Wang delights us with forty
paintings of delicate pastry cakes
from China. These striking and
unusual oil on linen paintings add
another dimension to the traditional
ideal of the intimate still life
paintings. Using his stylistic
abstraction, Jian sets his cakes in
a strongly lit and impasto patterned
background. What appears is a
visual trove of irresistible fruit,
corn, bean and rice cakes from
Beijing.
We view again his new intimate
figure paintings and contemporary
but lyrical landscapes. As James
Scarborough would pen, Jian
continues to balance between the
“ephemeral and the timeless”. Join
