In the summer of 2000, I connected with my Norwegian family of 135
cousins for the first time. The role of location, with my large-scale
publicly sited work, has always been important to me, but now it took on
a more intimate relevance. I stayed in contact with several of my new
relatives, and made a second visit in the summer of 2007. These
ancestral farms have been in the families since the early 1600’s, tucked
up under glaciers, wedged between dangerously precipitous mountains and
icy glacier lakes. Water dominates the landscape and I followed it up
and down, compelled to consider the relationship between the ice and the
stone.
