Cynthia
Hurley created this
eariler series of paintings inspired by her visual experience of
being an artist in residence at Joshua Tree National Monument.
Exquisitely detailed, Hurley presents an oasis for the mind. Serene,
contemplative desert landscapes discloses the delicate balance of life.
Hurley exposes the desert’s hidden verdancy through color, composition
and light. There is a beauty in
the intricacy of the carefully laid brushstrokes. The build up of the
brushstrokes creates a complex play between hyperrealism and
abstraction. Hurley works from photographs as a compositional tool. The
paintings then transgress through imagination and spiritual
contemplation.
