Bruce Keller - "Solitude and Contemplation" - March 4 - April 3, 2004

Bruce Keller paintings suggest a feeling of the early California landscapes where the motif of virgin land was common. His works observe natures’ interaction, balance and composition without the seeming chaos now detracting from the rich beauty of California. As the population grows, and fabricated structures replace the splendor of our land, the artist draws from past childhood memories and experience. The result of creating a vision of solitude and contemplation allows the softness of tranquil pastures, old weathered oak trees, meandering waters and traveled paths of wildflowers.

Keller creates his paintings, perhaps with “rose-colored glasses” and from his intangible pallet of vision. He spots those elements within our land that permit a chance vista with weathered and lonely elements. Filtering the California light into an unusual soft pallet allows a feeling of quiet and results in perceiving the intimate parts of our landscape. Keller is not an Expressionist, a Realist, or an Impressionist, yet the qualities and elements he produces in his work brings us to times of yore. Our senses pass beyond the intrusion of manufactured objects as the artist exacts a few places in our landscape that are not fettered with traffic and glut. We walk a different bridge. It is one of pleasant surroundings and restful imagination coupled with warmth, sunlight, and sounds left for contemplation.
