John
Bowler Jr. has enjoyed success as a figurative artist working in the
medium of pastel. The artist now delves into acrylic paint with both
fervent energy and a refined understanding of the figure. He continues his
unique view, often skewed and off-center, but always expressive. Bowler
strives to maintain a limited palette, creating works that are
psychologically intriguing. Some of Bowler’s multiple-figure compositions
have the ability to be turned upside down and viewed with a different
perspective.
Using Masonite as his
preferred substrate, Bowler paints selected portions with overlapping
gestures that express an idea, sentiment or attitude. The artist’s
marriage of drawing and painting melds these techniques into compositions
that are spontaneous and fresh, yet multifaceted and layered. He executes
his acute and often sensitive portrayal of a model with precision,
allowing the viewer to entertain hidden secrets composed within the
expressions of the figure’s entire gesture. |
