M.R. Chase’s
imagery of contemporary stories of the current saga of the harsh
realities and pleasures of life is impacted with sweeping movements.
Chase plays with many powerful and moving images, bringing to mind the
style of Paul Cadmus.
Past exhibitions dealt with the
cycles of ordinary street people, beggars and lonely figures fighting
the ills of cancer. Her passion is to paint narratives in large-scale
works. These stories are brightly, yet subtly colored and are often
enhanced with some mixed media on the canvases. Some of her recent
works were presented in an exhibition at the Walter A. Buehler Gallery
at University of California, Davis in early 2004.
In this new presentation, Chase’s
oeuvre deals with a narratives about cycles of contemporary life, but
more about the brighter side of the human condition including
celebration, dance and music. Her ‘stored thoughts, wanderings and
daydreams’ allow the viewer to sometimes be part of the crowd. The
effectiveness of presenting multiple figures is enhanced by her
provocative, compelling and potent painting style.
